What causes acne?

Acne can be frustrating, embarrassing and difficult to manage.  What works for your friend may not work for you.  You may need to try a few different products before success.

Teen acne is primarily caused by hormones in overdrive during puberty. For adults, chronic stress and hormonal fluctuations are the main culprits.  Some adults may experience regular outbreaks even though they had clear skin as teens.   Other factors may exacerbate the problem such as makeup, skin care routine and diet.

In a nutshell, acne is caused when pores get clogged and inflamed resulting in comedones (blackheads) or pustules (zits).  Acne sufferers typically have thicker and stickier sebum (oil) and a proliferation of skin cells that do not shed as fast as they should.

There are many solutions, but there is not one ingredient or product that works for everyone.  Finding what works for you may be challenging, but don’t give up.  Keep trying!  There is hope!

Here are some ingredients to look out for:

  • Salicylic Acid - clears out pores and reduces inflammation
  • Benzoyl Peroxide - an oldie but goodie ingredient that rids zits of bacteria
  • Tea Tree - a natural anti-septic that kills bacteria
  • Clays - absorb oil
  • Niacinamide - controls oil
  • Green Tea & Bisabolol - control inflammation
